MINUTES

CALLED MEETING OF THE ALLEGHANY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

February 22, 2018

The Alleghany County School Board held a called meeting on February 22, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Alleghany County Governmental Complex in Covington, Virginia.   This was a joint meeting with the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors.

PRESENT:  Gerald E. Franson, Vice Chairman; Norman L. Persinger, Jr.; Jennifer S. Seckner;  Randall S. Tucker, Chairman; and Jacob L. Wright.  Also present:  Eugene P. Kotulka, Superintendent; and Lorie C. Bess, Clerk.

ABSENT:    R. Craig Lane and Danielle I. Morgan

Chairman Tucker presided and called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.  The call to order was followed by a moment of silence and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

(18-227) DISCUSSION REGARDING SCHOOL SAFETY AND SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS

There was discussion between the Boards to have School Resource Officers at each school.  Currently, there are no officers at the elementary schools.  Jon Lanford, County Administrator, recommended to transfer $40,000 to the Sheriff’s Office overtime budget for School Resource Officer coverage at each elementary school and also to put a program in place to provide coverage by the beginning of school in the fall of 2018.  Mr. Kotulka and Board members thanked the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Lanford, and the Sheriff’s Office for working with the schools to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
